World Lupus Day (WLD) on 10 May is a day when Lupus organisations around the world call for increased funding for medical research on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), targeted education programmes for health professionals, patients and the public, and worldwide recognition of SLE as an important health issue.
To commemorate WLD 2010, Persatuan SLE Malaysia (PSLEM) will be organising a public forum in Petaling Jaya on Sunday, 9 May, the day before the actual date, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., followed by lunch and counselling sessions for SLE patients and their family members.
The theme for the WLD 2010 Public Forum is “Caring for the Lupus Patient” to acknowledge that although SLE is a serious auto-immune disorder, with proper care and treatment, there is hope for people diagnosed with this disease. All SLE patients, their family members, caregivers, friends, and members of the public are welcome to attend. There will be two sessions: a BM/English session and a Mandarin session. Participation is free-of-charge but has to be by prior confirmation.
The public forum speakers comprise doctors who are in the front line of providing care for SLE patients, while their talks aim to educate SLE patients on how to take care of themselves as well as to help their family members and caregivers understand this complex disease. The public forum also hopes to increase public awareness of SLE so as to contribute towards an earlier diagnosis, thereby improving the patient’s chances of survival.
